Ho Chi Minh’s “Little Japan” or Japan Town is one of the city’s most upscale residential districts and is a vibrant treasure trove of excellent Japanese eateries, cafes, and bars lining the lantern-lit alleyways (yokocho). In Ho Chi Minh’s vibrant and engaging Japan Town, you can find dazzling Japanese influences in everything from cuisine to leisure to entertainment. Around 2010, a significant increase in the number of Japanese expats moving to the city for business purposes gave Le Thanh Tonne and Thai Van Lung Streets a significant boost. Many Japanese expats chose to settle in the area’s backstreets, where there are many Japanese businesses, and they eventually established a tight-knit community. Since then, as Japanese restaurateurs and creative pub owners attracted to its unique environment started opening businesses in and around it, this under-the-radar neighbourhood has started to gain popularity. The Japan Town neighbourhood is tucked away in the lanes behind Le Thanh Tonne and Thai Van Lung Streets, which are home to Japanese offices and eateries. You can enter the neighbourhood via the 15A, 15B, or 8A Thai Van Lung alleys. Only the 15B alley and the 8A Thai Van Lung alley connect the other two of these alleys. The 15B alley, where you’ll be welcomed by the sight of numerous lanterns, is visible after walking for around 100 metres straight ahead for those who are eager to experience the exciting nightlife here. This area is also where Ho Chi Minh’s most well-known lantern locations are located, since the area is completely engulfed in a crimson glow after dark. The 15B lane is intricate and crowded, like a maze. It wasn’t until around 2000 that this particular alleyway was created, as more and more eateries started to appear. It expanded to include more restaurants, massage parlours, bars, and lodging for local Japanese people at reasonable prices. Before entering the neighbourhood, check the directories at each alley’s entrance to make sure you won’t get lost. One of Little Japan’s drawbacks is the abundance of “massage parlours” strewn around the alley. If you get what I mean, they all have happy endings. Which is OK, as long as you’re not being forced, no criticism? However, it seems to be bad if you want a real massage. Unintentionally visiting one, it is widely reported that the massage is not very good. Imagine a bunch of random pinching and rubbing. The women will usually be hanging out outside in very fitting attire, making it easy to distinguish between a legitimate spa and a fake one. If you’ve ever experienced a genuine massage, you’ll know that the masseuses always dress comfortably so they can move around.
