Welcome to Shiogama home to a CRAZY auction for Japan’s most coveted ingredient : TUNA!!

Book your own Japanese Food Experience with By Food : https://www.byfood.com/experiences/sendai-food-and-culture-tour-in-shiogama-223

Today I’m taking you inside the auction to get a closer look at this beloved fish. Before heading over to the Shiogama Wholesales Fishery Market where you can sample fresh, never frozen tuna like you’ve never had before!

Shiogama is located just a short train ride from Sendai city which is also known for a lesser popular cut of meat : beef tongue!! Gyutan or grilled beef tongue usually using USDA beef is a speciality of Sendai City. In the typical Japanese fashion Gyutan is grilled to perfection, making it taste on par with other premium cuts of beef. Gyutan is NOT to be missed in Sendai.

  1. The auction record was set in 2019, when a bluefin sold for a staggering $3.1 million. Oma's bluefin tuna, nicknamed “black diamonds”

  2. it always fascinates me how they have these super expensive fish but they still drag them around on the floor instead of putting them on a cart or something 🙂 i guess the floor is clean though, but still it seems like it could damage the meat

  3. Thank you for coming to Tohoku. After the 311 earthquake, there was reputational damage, and some people overseas still think that it is scary. I am filled with gratitude. I think the people of Tohoku are also very happy.💞Thank you so much!

  4. It was the first time to see so many tunas lined up on the ground, it was really spectacular!
The auction process is so fast, it seems that those tuna are free, haha!
That Seafood Donburi is so pretty and looks delicious!
You did a really great job, thanks a lot for sharing!👍😄👏

  5. 😮saliva in mouth
    overflowing🤤
I definitely want to eat it😝
    thank you!🤗

  6. This same Tuna auction happening in the US would end in fighting, property damage, claims that the white man got the best Tuna and all the usual nonsense. Notice how in spite of the chaotic auction, the Japanese people are still humble, respectful and non violent. Its nice to witness.
