Shinkansen is a Japanese term that means 'new trunk line' or 'new main line'. In English, it is popularly called as 'bullet train' because of its tremendous bullet-like speed.
The JR Group operates Shinkansen high speed rail lines. It is further operated by five JR Group companies.
1. JR Central – Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo to Shin-Osaka)
2. JR West – Sanyo Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka to Hakata), Hokuriku Shinkansen (Takasaki to Kanazawa)
3. JR East – Tohoku Shinkansen (Tokyo to Shin-Aomori), Joetsu Shinkansen (Omiya to Niigata), Hokuriku Shinkansen (Takasaki to Kanazawa)
4. JR Kyushu – Kyushu Shinkansen (Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo), Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen (Takeo-Onsen to Nagasaki)
5. JR Hokaido – Hokkaido Shinkansen (Shin-Aomori to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto)
