The forty-seven Ronin (leaderless samurai) avenged the death of their master. As a consequence they were obliged to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for the crime of murder.
This event in the 18th century is known as the Ako incident.
The memory of the 47 Ronin, who put duty and justice before their fear of death, has lived down through the centuries as one of the greatest examples of honour and loyalty in Japanese culture.
Each year, on December 14th, thousands of people from around the world visit the graves of the 47 Ronin at Sengakuji Temple in Tokyo to pay their respects.

  8. I emigrated to Japan in 2019 and have been here 3 times already. I absolutely am obsessed with Japanese culture given the fact that my wife is Japanese and one of her ancestor is one of the 47 Ronin. She has his helmet on display in our living room. It's really heavy! So much pride!
