Moments after it was announced on Monday that the next Imperial era would be called Reiwa, calligrapher Fuka Ryo drew the two kanji characters that make up the name — rei, which means “order” or “command” and wa, which means “peace” or “harmony” — on a piece of paper which was then reproduced and printed on hundreds of shirts that were distributed for free to people in Shibuya. Later, Ryo wrote the characters again but on a much bigger piece of paper. The new era will begin on May 1 after Crown Prince Naruhito ascends the Chrysanthemum throne.
