The Children’s Peace Monument, topped by the figure of Sadako Sasaki, is surrounded by paper cranes donated to Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park from around the world. The nine booths surrounding the monument were installed by the city in 2002 to protect the cranes. Children’s Peace Monument receives 10 metric tons of paper cranes annually — more than the weight of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atom bombs combined. Sasaki’s former friend Tomiko Kawano works to keep Sasaki’s memory alive and promote the origami crane as an international symbol of peace. (Peter Chordas photos)
