Komenya Reel Cafe (湖麺屋 リールカフェ) is a mix between a high end ramen shop and a high end coffee shop right at the foot of Mount Fuji, next to the beautiful Lake Yamanaka. I made my way there during winter times to get a great view of Mount Fuji with the famous snow cap and to eat some of the great ramen at Reel Cafe.
It is hard to say what the specialty item of Komenya Reel Cafe is, since they are doing so many things really well and many people go there for different things. The most unique in my book was the soy milk based miso ramen. But they also have a great chicken shoyu ramen on the menu, as well as coffee specialties and a good amount of cakes, pies and other sweets. It is really hard to resist to grab one of those after you have finished your bowl of ramen.
Looking at the bowl of soy miso ramen in particular, the whole bowl and the toppings are prepared on a very high level. I could not find detailed information about the owner and chef, but I would bet good money that they have previous ramen shop experience.
The soup is thick and clearly based on soy milk, but it does not have an overly pungent soy milk taste. It is thickened with blended up roasted veggies. There is so much going on that it is hard to tell what exactly goes in there, but I could definitely taste some notes of roasted peppers and probably zucchini and carrot. The end product hast a nicely roasted aroma with a deep and complex flavor profile. The noodles are a medium thick and slightly curly, so that you pull up nice amounts of soup with every slurp, as the soup sticks to the noodles quite well. You get a bunch of toppings on the side, among them very crunchy and tasty menma, some sous-vide prepared pork chashu and an egg with a great gooey yolk texture.
Overall I was very surprised and impressed by Reel Cafe. Since the area is quite touristy, I did not expect to find this kind of high quality ramen here. I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit to anyone who is in the area and wants to eat some great ramen. But even for just a coffee and some cake, this place is worth checking out.
