The energetic and flamboyant dances of yosakoi lit up the stages and streets around Harajuku and Omotesando this past weekend.
Hailing from all over Japan and beyond, 107 teams comprising a total of 6,300 dancers converged on Tokyo to perform their unique spins on the yosakoi genre of festival dance, which was first performed in 1954.

As the dance originated in Kochi Prefecture, it’s not surprising that seven of Kochi’s teams took the lion’s share of this year’s 19 prizes, included the top prize.
As with past festivals, dancers both young and all braved humid and hot weather to give it their all. (Photos by Mio Yamada @nomadcat_mio and Mark Thompson @guchagucha)
