If you’re a bit of a history buff and looking for a glimpse of old Japan, you may want to add the Nakasendo Road to your bucket list. This historic trade route once connected Tokyo and Kyoto during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The trail winds though scenic mountains and valleys and was once dotted with 69 post towns (rest stops). Weary travellers would stop in along the way for both accommodation and entertainment. 🚶

While most of the post towns succumbed to modern development, some along the Kiso Valley remain well-preserved, like Tsumago-juku in Nagano Prefecture.
