Ancient temples, a scenic canal district and a glimpse of… hell?! We must be in Chiba Prefecture!
1. When visiting Chiba a visit to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple in Narita is highly recommended. This ancient temple is elaborately designed with intricate carvings and dates back to 940 AD!
2. The canals of the quaint and picturesque Sawara sightseeing district also offer the chance to step back in time. These waterways were used by merchants over 200 years ago.
3. Visit the Hoki Museum, Japan’s first art museum dedicated to realism.
4. Hike or take a scenic cable car to the top of Mt Nokogiri (329 metres). The main lookout at the top of the mountain is known as Jigoku Nozoki, or ‘a glimpse of hell’. The jagged outcrop provides the perfect vantage point and provides spectacular views of the Boso Peninsula and Tokyo Bay.
5. The ocean surrounding Chiba is a seafood treasure trove! Try Ise Ebi, a small spiny lobster prized for its sweet, firm flesh.
6. Take a ride through Chiba’s lush countryside on Kominato Railway’s ‘Boso Satoyama Torocco’, a sightseeing train that runs between Goi and Yoso Valley Stations.
