The remote and picturesque @UNESCO heritage listed villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama are famed for their houses with steeply pitched thatched roofs – the only examples of their kind in Japan.

TOP TIP: If you’re coming from Takayama, buses run hourly to Shirakawa-go taking around 1 hour. (2,470 yen one way, or approx $30 AUD). If you’re coming from Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama, (12,500 yen one way – approx $150), then transfer to the bus that runs to Shirakawa-go (1,700 yen one way, approx $20 AUD). The villages of Gokayama can be accessed by bus from Ogimachi in Shirakawago. Photo by @annetachado #VisitJapanAU
