Unzen, Japan here in Nagasaki Prefecture is a small onsen town filled with a rich history. Today we’re doing a day trip to the top 3 sites that you have to visit if you are going to visit Unzen here on the island of Kyushu. This is a great daytrip from Sasebo as it is only about a 2 hour drive away. I love finding things to do near Sasebo especially when it’s an affordable and easy drive.

List of places visited in order:

Lunch: Not pictured in this video, but we ate at Green Terrace Unzen right near the Hells. This was a tasty Japanese restaurant that was on the pricer side but the options in this area are fairly limited. They didn’t have an English menu, but the menu was easily translated on google translate and the staff was absolutely delightful, I recommend this place for sure!

Unzen Hells: Parking is right across the street and is 500 yen. You write your license plate on a piece of paper and drop it in a box so yes this is all on the honor system.

Unzen Ropeway: It is a 100yen charge to drive the road up to the ropeway, but it is one way up and one way down so it’s nice to not have to worry about any cars coming towards you as you climb up the windy roads. There is a little viewing area before you get to the main parking lot that is worth stopping at.

Mt. Myoken Shrine: We didn’t make it all the way up to this because the bugs were just too bad. The pictures make it look pretty though and I’d say if the weather is nice it would be worth checking out.

Japan’s Longest Footbath: This was the perfect end to the day. We sat and enjoyed the view of the ocean while we soaked our feet. Parking is right in front of the bath and costs 250yen. There are lots of things within walking distance so leave the car and explore the area.

Orange Gelato:
