ONE PIECE Kumamoto Revival Project (ONE PIECE 熊本復興プロジェクト)
The Kumamoto earthquake struck in April 2016. Immediately after the earthquake, on April 17, a heartwarming message from Eiichiro Oda, a manga artist from Kumamoto Prefecture, said “I will definitely come to your aid”.
In order to use this message as a “driving force” for Kumamoto’s recovery, the “ONE PIECE Kumamoto Recovery Project” was launched in cooperation with the manga “ONE PIECE” and Kumamoto Prefecture.
In 2016, as the first phase, a reconstruction project such as a stamp rally and a wrapping train was carried out in Kumamoto prefecture. In addition, many runners were cheered on by the “Straw Hat Pirates” at the Kumamoto Castle Marathon, and Mashiki Town produced “ONE PIECE Original Returns” and received a lot of tax payments.
In the second phase in 2017, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the serialization of “ONE PIECE”, Mr. Oda and Shueisha presented a special message and a commemorative gift to all new adults in Kumamoto Prefecture. In addition, “ONE PIECE” characters jacked the Kumamoto Prefecture website and other projects were developed.
In April 2018, Kumamoto Prefecture presented Mr. Oda with the “Prefectural Citizens’ Honour Award” in recognition of his achievements to date and in appreciation of his efforts to support reconstruction. To commemorate the award, a statue of Luffy was completed on 30 November 2018.
In the future, more statues of the straw men will be built throughout Kumamoto Prefecture. Reconstruction is still halfway through, and with the Straw Hat Gang, new adventures will continue.
