As if out of nowhere, these large rock formations sit right at the southern tip of the spectacular Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture. Stretching for almost 850 metres along the coast, these pinnacle-shaped rocks form a dramatic natural art showcase set against the rising or setting sun. 🌅 Legend has it the legendary monk Kobo Daishi attempted to build a bridge here but these pointy foundations are all that remain.

Combine a leisurely road trip along this part of the Wakayama coast with a hike along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route to fully experience the natural wonders of this area.

📍 From Kushimoto Station, take the Kumano Kotsu Bus to Hashigui-iwa stop. Kushimoto Station is around 3.5 hours on the JR Limited Express Kuroshio Line from Shin-Osaka Station.
