Thirty nurses, doctors and staff at Tokyo Rosai Hospital in Ota Ward received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, joining thousands of essential workers in Japan who have taken Pfizer’s shot since Feb. 17.

Vaccine minister Taro Kono said 40,000 essential workers will become inoculated first. Other medical workers will receive their first dose most likely before essential workers get their second shot some time after March 10, but the elderly won’t get their doses until some time after April 1, though it’s unclear exactly when or how quickly.
