Walk Japan – Hakozaki Station to Hakozaki Shrine | Japan 4K Walking Tour (箱崎駅/箱崎宮)

Today I take a walk to a very historical place in Fukuoka called Hakozaki Shrine. Throughout this walk through the city streets of Japan, you can see interesting shops and stores along the way.

The Origin of the Hakozaki Shrine

The Hakozaki Shrine is one of Japan’s three great shrines dedicated to the kami Hachiman, the spirit of the Japanese Emperor Ojin (AD 200-310). In 921, having received an oracle from the gods, Emperor Daigo (885-930) wrote the calligraphy – “May the enemy nations prostrate themselves [in defeat]” and he also erected a shrine here facing the mainland of Asia. In 923, Hachiman, the deity of the shrine in Usa (in modern day Oita Prefecture), was transferred and enshrined here at Hakozaki.

The Enshrined Kami and Their Divine Virues

The Hakozaki Shrine is dedicated to the main kami, the Emperor Ojin; his mother, the Empress Jingu; and the female kami Tamayori-hime. Ojin, the fourth son of the Emperor Chuai (149-200), was born in the local village of Kata (now the town of Umi, Kasuya district, Fukuoka prefecture). Ojin was the fifteenth Emporer of Japan.

Ojin is considered the patron deity of commerce and industry; scholarship and the arts; and martial arts’ pursuits. Also, the fact that Ojin’s umbilical cord is buried here at Hakozaki, the shrine is also revered as the kami of safe childbirth. Since this location has been important for foreign travel since the early times, Hachiman is also popularly considered to be the guardian deity of travel.

The main hall and worship hall of the Hakozaki Shrine are designated important cultural treasures. In June of 921, a government official named Fujiwara Makiason had a Main Hall built here at Hakozaki. During the intervening centuries, Hakozaki Shrine was repeatedly razed to the ground. The present Main Hall and Worship Hall were rebuilt by the warlord Ouchi Yoshitaka in 1546.

The Tower Gate is also an Important Cultural Treasure

The shrine’s Tower Gate was built by the warlord Kobayakawa Takakage (1533-1597). The three-leafed paulownia tree crest above the two doors is of one of the great unifiers of Japan, Tyotomi Hideyoshi.

The main torii gateway into the shrine is also an Important Cultural Treasure. The reigning feudal lord of Fukuoka, Kuroda Nagamasa, presented this torii in 1609.

The Flowing-Forth Rock

In a corner of the shrine, there is a small rock that is surrounded by a small, red fence. There is a local belief that touching this rock will serve to make good fortune flow forth into one’s life. An old folks tale says that when a momentous occasion is about to take place in Japan, this rock will emerge from the ground as a sign.

Divine Tree: The “Box Pine”

There is a pine tree called the hakomatsu, or Box Pine. This pine tree is a divine tree that has a special relationship to the kami of this shrine, the Emporer Ojin, who is known as Hachiman. When Emperor Ojin was born, his umbilical cord was placed in a box and buried at Hakozak. It is said that this pine was planted here to mark the location where the imperial umbilical cord was buried.

Kameyama Emperor Statue

There is a wood carving with a height of 6m and weight of one ton of the Emperor Kameyama, that was built in 1902 as well
