Have you noticed torii gates are often placed in or next to water? ⛩️🌊In Shinto religion, water symbolises purification and torii gates are the sacred gateways to ‘kami’ or deities and placement in or next to water represents this purity. Torii gates that are not near bodies of water will often have basins called ‘temizuya’ or ‘chozuya’ for visitors to cleanse or purify themselves before entering! 📷 Beautiful capture by @annhelg. #VisitJapanAU #Tradition
