The Hitaki-Sai Fire Festival happens once a year at the Fushimi Inari Shrine. During the ritual, three large fires are lit and for hours the priests throw bundles of prayer sticks to the fires. These prayers sticks are a common tradition in Japan where people ask for good wishes and fortune.

The ritual is a combination of the fire consuming these wishes, the blessing and cleansing of them by the priests and of the chants and dramatic music that amplify the common good for everyone participating.
