Gyōza dumplings became popular in Japan after WWII when soldiers returning from northeastern China brought recipes back with them. Today, however, these bite size bundles of dough are associated with a different war: the gyōza wars. Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, reigned as the capital for gyōza consumption for 15 years but was overtaken by its rival: Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, back in 2010. The two cities have been battling it out for the top spot ever since. Try out homemade dumplings for yourself with the recipe in our bio. 📸 Makiko Itoh
