A natural UNESCO World Heritage site, Yakushima is an island in southern Japan that is home to 1,000-year-old trees, pristine beaches, and Japan’s largest turtle-nesting site. Yakushima is also the stuff of Japanese legends. This little island is the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage site, the inspiration for Studio Ghibli’s film “Princess Mononoke” and home to some of the best natural wonders in Japan.
