Japan’s over tourism problem | Kyoto travel vlog
Japan is experiencing a boom in tourists since it re-opened to the world after the pandemic. But with the Yen at an all-time low and the rewarding nature of having the opportunity to visit, people are taking the chance to go and in record numbers. Which means that everywhere is filled with tourists.
In this video we’re in Kyoto. It’s absolutely stunning as a place, but the amount of visitors there were staggering, and everyone’s concerned about what damage this is doing to preserved places in and around the city.
We visit some key sights such as:
Tofukuji Temple
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
Gion
[BONUS] J-League 1 Match
Whilst I moan a lot in this video, this should serve as a realistic reference for when you travel to Japan next. You should still go to Kyoto. But just saying, it’s wildly busy

I spent a month on Kyoto and I genuinely hated Kiyomizudera and Kinkaku-ji and I didn't even bother to visit Nijo Castle or Bamboo forest. Japan has unlimited quiet, stunning shrines and outlooks. Boy oh boy is it not necessary to visit Kyoto or Osaka
I wonder how many tourists end up wandering and picking random locations when they travel?
Japan doesn't have a lot of tourists, Kyoto, and partly Tokyo do. It's a big country with a lot of things to see, perhaps they should aggressively promote different places with attractive transportation offers and decentralize tourism a little. Recently they increased the JR Pass price, that is the opposite move to help with the decentralization.
