Shogoin Monzeki, a historic Kyoto Buddhist temple (est. 1090) with ties to the Imperial family and the head temple of the Honzan Shugen sect, celebrates Setsubun, marking the lunar new year’s arrival of spring, by cleansing bad luck and inviting good fortune.

The main ritual, mamemaki (bean-throwing), involves chanting “Oni out! Good luck in!” while throwing roasted soybeans to ward off evil spirits (oni).

Setsubun is typically celebrated on February 3rd, in 2025 it falls on the 2nd. The bean-throwing ritual starts at 13:00 at Shogoin Monzeki temple.
