We ate at a restaurant called Asakusa Imahen in Tokyo and the yakiniku portion of our meal came with a set that had the circled items in my images. I’ve been searching for months and I cannot figure out what it was! It was really good and I want to be able to ask for it at other Japanese restaurants.

TIA!

What was the texture? Cause it honestly looks like a tofu fish blend to me but given what it’s being cooked in feels less likely.

What texture or visual fibers was it?

Looks like fish tofu to me, it’s a type of surimi originating from China

The dish in your pics is *sukiyaki* rather than *yakiniku*.

The blocks are *fu*, [wheat gluten](https://www.justonecookbook.com/fu-wheat-gluten/), and they’re a signature ingredient for the Imahan restaurant. It’s not always found as an ingredient for sukiyaki.

*Fu* comes in many forms, and can be wet or dry. This specific type is called [*choji-fu*](https://www.imahan.com/archives/3937)*.* You can also buy the [restaurant’s own branded ones](https://store.imahan.com/shopdetail/000000000260/), which they call *sukiyaki-fu*
