Why does this pack of candy just have one black guppy? Is there a cultural reason behind?
My mom brought me this from Japan and it only has one black guppy inside, out of many red ones. Why?

No… just the flavours are apple and cola. And it’s based off Leo Lionni’s kids book” swimmy” which is about a black guppy…
It’s not a racially motivated candy 😂

Why are people making a race thing out of this? It’s weird. They just asked if there was a cultural reason for only having one black gummy. The cultural reason being, as someone else mentioned, it’s based on a story.

The machine probably just drops candy into the bag until it reaches a certain weight or a certain number of pieces. If the two flavors were being dispensed from the same container, then it’s just random.

It is based on a story book that is very popular called Swimmy. The titular “swimmy” is a little black fish in a school of all orange/red fish. He gets chased off by a shark and goes on an adventure all alone. Eventually he finds his school again and learns that by working together, they can look like a big scary fish to keep the predators away. Being the only black fish, he is the eye of the school. Id say that there is only 1 black guppy because he was the only one in the story but it could also just be the machine spitting out only one.

What u/GloopMaxing said. This story is featured in most (?) / a lot of elementary school textbooks so all the kids here know the story.
