Ikumio Railway Crossing is located in Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama City, and passes right by the JR Tokaido Main Line. This level crossing is famous as the “no-open level crossing,” and because of its unusual structure of 45 meters in length, there is always the fear that a train will approach before you can cross. In addition, a monument to the Namamugi Incident stands quietly nearby. In 1862, a British merchant encountered a procession of feudal lords from the Satsuma domain and was brutally attacked, resulting in the biggest diplomatic issue at the end of the Edo period, and relations between Japan and Britain deteriorated. After that, the Satsuma-British War broke out in retaliation, and Satsuma was at war. However, through the battle, the Satsuma domain instead deepened its ties with Britain and promoted modernization. As a result, the groundwork for the Meiji Restoration was laid.
