there are so many things to do and
explore in Racine from wonderful food to
a great lake it is also home to three
incredible structures built by Frank
Lloyd Wright perhaps the best known are
the SC Johnson administration building
and the SC Johnson research Tower but as
the Interiors are not available to be
filmed we will focus on the other
significant Racine work of Frank Lloyd
Wright Wing spread in this video we will
tour this private home that is now a
conference center and show you some
other fun things to do in Racine while
you are in the area and as a bonus we
will take you to our favorite pizza
place in Racine thanks for joining us on

welcome back to love nesters we are in
Racine Wisconsin today we are right now
at Wing spread and we are exploring
Racine through the different things that
Frank Lloyd Wright has inspired or
created Frank Lloyd Wright a Wisconsin
native created this home which turned
into a conference center we’re excited
to show it to you thanks for being here
thanks for being here
what a beautiful space this is this is
really the heart of the home Frank Lloyd
Wright wanted families out of their
bedrooms and all congregating together
in these large common areas
absolutely stunning
spread was designed by Frank Lloyd
Wright for H.F Johnson and his family at
14 000 square feet it is one of the
largest prairie style homes ever
designed by Frank Lloyd Wright it has a
pinwheel design with a central common
area at one time the four wings included
a parent’s Wing a children’s Wing a
guest wing and a service wing it took
two years to build during that time his
second wife died he did remarry and his
third wife Irene lived in the house with
his two children for a time during our
tour we are allowed to explore two of
the Wings and the central common area
was the last prairie style home that
Frank Lloyd Wrights
it is the largest residential home that
he ever designed except for his own home
now I had mentioned earlier about the
organic architecture he was really known
for it he wanted to use materials inside
the house outside the house to blend
with the Landscaping Landscaping to land
in with the house making it one in the
same the home is settling right into the
land itself I’m going to point out a
couple of those organic architecture
ideas to you now this fireplace is 30
feet tall from Florida ceiling it’s
absolutely beautiful but what he did
he just really want you to always
concentrate on the height of it because
you’re going to notice that what I want
to mentioned is throughout all the
brickwork in the home but going
horizontally he actually breaks the
mortar and where I can actually put my
fingers in between the brakes what he
did perfectly he is he made the mortar
flush with the brick and he turned
tinted it red and when you look at it
your eyes actually do go horizontal to
go with the lay of the land and the
spread of the wind as well the built-in
Furniture very horizontal low to the
land on there check out the dental work
here by the wood here underneath the
moldings throughout you’ll even see it
all on the furniture that he designed
for this home your eyes automatically
follow the lay of the Land There Are
Over 530 windows in Williamsburg 192 of
them are in the celestial ceiling and if
you know anything about Frank Lloyd
right you’ve heard about he’s known for
leaking windows and doors and these
windows leaked on and off for many many
years and finally in the early 1990s Sam
who was the young boy grew up here now
in charge of the S.C Johnson company
fourth generation said we have to get a
permanent fix to these windows so
somebody in one of the meetings said you
know if you turn that ceiling upside
down it looks like the bottom of a boat
they literally brought in both Builders
and ended up using materials that they
sealed the bottom of the boats with to
seal the windows closed without
deterring from his designs
do you see these beautiful 16-foot
Windows look close and they’re not just
Windows they are doors you could open up
the doors walk out those doors and
extend that living space going out into
the Landscaping as well notice the brick
panels in between those window doors
those are called privacy screens now Mr
Wright definitely wanted you to see the
beautiful landscaping but he also knew
people wanted to have some privacy as
well
thank you
[Music]
not all of Frank Lloyd Wright’s ideas
were good ones this dining room table
was on Wheels and intended to be pulled
into the kitchen between courses to have
the plates changed it did not go over
well
[Music]
do you really get a sense of a much
narrow hallway as you go through these
spaces
foreign
[Music]
but originally it would have been a
playroom for the Johnson children
[Music]
foreign
[Music]
this pinstripe flooring was actually
laminated from several species of
different trees it’s extremely expensive
this is the failed fireplace that was
used once and the logs burnt and felt
into the room
so they never used it again
but it is pretty
[Music]
this is Frank Lloyd Wright designed
Furniture including the Ottoman and the
table that you see below
and these are the openings between the
first floor and the mezzanine that
allowed music to travel between the two
levels
little details everywhere
so these chairs were the original chairs
that were designed for that dining room
table
it took six months to create this Lego
version of wing spread it does give you
a good overview
this cheery space was the bedroom of
Johnson’s daughter her one request was a
balcony and she certainly got a
beautiful one
hey we are on another adventure and if
you have suggestions for anything
throughout the Midwest please comment it
would be greatly appreciated yeah some
of our best suggestions came from people
telling us where to go we try to go out
I’ll tell you where to go we try to go
on these Adventures every week because
it keeps our marriage fresh
if you’re looking for an adventure ideas
we sure appreciate it if you’d subscribe
to our Channel and give this video a
thumbs up some of you that have always
wondered what a Frank Lloyd Wright
designed bathroom would look like I
believe it’s had some updates but it’s
it’s pretty minimal
it’s neat this is just a little Nook of
a room
and it’s got this low ceiling but then
when you come into the sitting area it
gets a little bit higher and of course
we have yet another fireplace
thank you
this is another Frank Lloyd Wright
design piece of furniture many of the
pieces in this house you are allowed to
sit on and of course a Frank Lloyd
Wright design is bringing nature in and
so built right into the house are these
lovely planters
[Music]
the Johnson Foundation at wingspread was
set up to promote the free exchange of
constructive and purposeful ideas some
of the more notable ideas to come from
their conferences include National
Public Radio the National Endowment for
the Arts and the initial blueprint for
arms control
foreign
H.F Johnson’s third wife would have
another piece of art donated to the
property each year for her birthday
so this beautiful property is 36 Acres
Frank Lloyd Wright really tried to
incorporate nature in with the elements
everything’s real natural
hey we just got done with the wing
spread it’s a Frank Lloyd Wright design

Wright this is a private residence and

I got to go up there and I got a video tape walking up the stairs as well as going down the stairs it's an awesome place I was just crushed that the company altered the bedrooms for the kids into conference rooms I think that's wrong maybe one day they'll put it back to square one
WINGSPREAD is in the town of WIND POINT, Wisconsin..
