More well known in English as the “Naked Men Festival,” the participants in the annual Ohara Hadaka Matsuri actually wear “momohiki” (longjohns) while carrying out ritual processions over two-to-three days. The festival’s highlight is undoubtedly the “shiofumi” (purification ritual) held this year at Ohara Port on Sept. 23, where shrine bearers tossed “mikoshi” (portable shrines) about in freezing waters to entertain the Shinto gods in exchange for their blessings. 📸: Kendrea Liew @ninesnaps
