This is behind the counter of a local family owned Japanese Teishoku ” Set Meal” restaurant called Shokudo Morikawa. Nestled within walking distance from Tokyo University, the oldest university in Japan, it’s been a staple nourishment for students for more than 120 years. The shop originally started selling bento boxes on the University campus distributing them with a carrying pole aka milkmaid’s yoke, and later grew into a Teishoku restaurant meaning it serves Japanese set meals, where all of the dishes in the course are served together often consisting of a main dish, rice, soup and sides. Today, the shop serves not only Japanese school students food, but also locals and salarymen alike all lining up to enjoy their delectable and affordable set meals. If you are search where to eat in Tokyo or what to do in Tokyo, this hidden gem would be a great place to eat lunch.

  1. Paolo, do you suffer from the opposite of depression? The smile feels like it takes energy to turn off.

  2. One consistent theme I've noticed in your day in the life videos is how hard everyone works. No complaining (on camera at least) just work hard and try to satisfy the customers. And many of the people in your videos are in retirement age yet just keep trucking along. It's quite inspirational. Makes me miss Japan so much.

  3. Thank you Paolo and Maiko for giving us a weekly upload of your videos. Seeing how Japanese people works very hard , it made me realize how I should work best in my work. I'm fond of Seiyuus, and hope there is a day in their life.

  4. I would get drunk & hunt their females & scares humans if i come there

Im like a fking tiger, the way i go about, f my instincts

  5. Ah the unsung story of the cafeteria worker. This brought back memories of my mom working in the elementary school cafeteria when I was young. Thanks for highlighting all ends of the spectrum with your video. I can't wait for our first planned vacation to Japan in 2025!

  6. Wow…that''s heart breaking. If my family had a business for over 120 years I'd jump on it.

  7. 😁 Dude, I’ve been trying your sauce with my daily Arabian food, here in Abu Dhabi. It’s great. I’ve tried it with various local dishes, all homemade, mostly made of basmati rice with chicken, lamb, and fish, along with various different vegetables and spices, like cardamom, saffron, cinnamon, black lime, bay leaves and nutmeg to go with each one. Google “Kabsa” or “Machbus” to get an idea. It’s been awesome. I sprinkle the hot sauce on my rice, take a chunk of chicken or lamb to go with it, and tuck that wonderfully delicious trio in my mouth. It’s definitely more delicious than many of the other hot/spicy dishes I’ve had over the years, ever since I was a kid.

I got the two bottles as a gift from an Australian friend of mine, all the way from Brisbane. Well done buddy, and good luck 🍀

  8. What a coincidence. Just as i thought myself "maybe i could be his student and continue the Business", for i love cooking too and also got a heart and mind for Tradition.
And then you said "Maybe it's one of the Viewers"… 🤩

But that would be a long way to go. Learning Japanese, move to Japan and learning all these Japanese Recipes. 😅

Also i really hope, that i can order and try one bottle of your hot sauce too. I really like spicy food and i'm very curious about this Japanese speciality

  9. I'm triggered! Why didn't You put a trigger warning before the start of the video that working 16h a day, 7 days a week is bad for Your mental health. Now I'm depressed.

  10. Behind the Counter…. Videos are always so interesting to watch. Japanese are so hardworking and this owner and his wife are no exception. It’s sad though that after 4 generations, the restaurant will have to close.

  11. Shops like this are amazing and the food is always amazing. Sad to hear that it will probably close with him though

  13. This is one thing I envy about Japan, I wish the USA had healthy and delicious food options available to us made by hand from someone who puts love into their food!

  14. 👆and only in Japan and Tabieats , life where I m from

  15. OMG heart attack !! … The rice cooker seemed to be on the blink – no rice : no dice – but , with grace under fire , our man got it going again – pheeee ooo !! A tiny miracle of ingenuity and adaptation , eh ?

  16. One of my friends lives in Japan and her daughter is a university student at Tokyo University. She always talks about the food being goid so I told her about your video. She quite enjoyed seeing behind the counter with her daughter since she went to school here back in the early 2000s. 😊

And 44 years is so long. A congrats to both on a successful marriage.

  17. I clicked on this video to see the delicious food but stayed for the wholesome relationship they have 🥹💖I hope he finds someone who continues their family business legacy!
