Today’s train: Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa
Runs between: Tokyo to Shinjo in Yamagata
Maximum Speed: Between Shinjo and Fukushima, 130 km/h as the shinkansen uses regular service trains’ track. Between Fukushima and Tokyo 270 km/h on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line.
Journey time: Tokyo- Shinjo, 3 hrs 43 mins
Ticket price: 13,000 yen
On a very cold day, I am starting my journey from Sendai station. Destination is Ginzan Onsen. First I am taking the JR Senzan line to Yamagata station. Journey time is 1 hour 23 mins. Ticket price is 1166 yen. Alternatively, a bus can also be taken but I opted for the train journey. I love this kind of slower trains. After reaching Yamagata station, I will take Yamagata Shinkansen to Oishida station, From Oishida station, I have to take a bus for Ginzan onsen.
Yamagata Shinkansen began its service in 1992. It is a E3 series shinkansen. The train is painted using four colours. Each representing Yamagata prefecture. Yamagata is snowiest prefecture in all of Japan. On average this prefecture receives a staggering 20.8 feet of snow.
Today’s train journey sees a lot of snow as you can well imagine. Oishida station looks as if it’s going under snow.
The shinkansen has green car and ordinary car. Green car has an old feeling, seats are thicker with adjustable headrest. Ordinary car looks more modern with comfortable seating. Though the train is old, it is equipped with all the necessary amenities onboard.
