I stayed at a room – ahem, a “sleep pod” – in one of Japan’s infamous capsule hotels. The hotel is called Nine Hours, and this one is located in the central city of Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture. It’s a small space, big enough for a single mattress, with a pillow and a curtain for privacy. A few dozen pods are lined up in the walls, so your neighbors are close. Ironically enough, the hotel is large, with ten floors, and includes nice shower facilities, a cafe, and a rooftop lounge with a view. It was an interesting experience, but I wouldn’t say I got the greatest night’s sleep.

  1. Jeremy, that was fun! How much in USD did you save compared with a regular hotel room in Nagoya? It kind of makes sense, considering that all one really needs is a comfortable bed to sleep in when traveling. When these hotels were first publicized in the US, I dismissed them as a weird artifact in an over-crowded country, but it looks inviting.

  2. Thanks to your experience if ever I plan on a ‘tiny room’ stay, I will bring a good set of noise-cancelation ear gear.
