Heitate Jingu Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Kamimashiki County, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. It is also known as “Hidden Shrine”.
According to one theory, it has a history of 15,000 years, and until recently, it was not widely known as an ancient shrine.
According to shrine legend, the origin of the shrine is said to be that Takeiwatatsunomikoto, grandson of Emperor Jinmu, enshrined Tenjin Jigigi (gods of the heavenly gods) here with a heihaku (a sacred object of worship) on his way to Aso.
The word “heihaku” means a generic term for offerings to the gods, and in ancient times, offerings were made of silk, linen, cotton, and other materials.
During the Engi era (901-923), Aso Daiguji Tomonari built a shrine and named it Heitate-sha.
Tomonari Aso also appears as the main character in the Noh song “Takasago” that Zeami wrote.
After that, in 1144, the Aso Twelve Gods were enshrined together and became the general guardian of Ohno Township.
The present shrine was rebuilt in 1729 by Nobunori Hosokawa, the fourth lord of the Kumamoto domain.
Heitate Jingu Shrine is located on the Median Tectonic Line, a major fault line that stretches 1,000 km east to west across the Japanese archipelago.
Important shrines, such as the Ise Jingu Shrine, are located on the Median Tectonic Line in various places, adding to the mystique of the Heitate Jingu Shrine.
Heidate Jingu Shrine is located near Takachiho, which has a tradition of descending from heaven, and is a mysterious shrine with various myths and legends.
It is one of the most famous power spots in Kyushu, where it even feels as if the world of mythology is still being maintained in the deep forest.
