It's true that there were some castles destroyed in WWII, but most of the castles from Edo times that no longer exist were dismantled during the reign of the Meiji emperor in the late 1800s, when the feudal system of government was abolished. Only 12 original castles remain in Japan, the rest are modern reconstructions.
