This is what it’s like to travel by train from Kumamoto to Aso in the Kyushu area.
The locomotive is a Kyushi Railway Company – KiHa 200DC Diesel Car. It runs between Kumamoto & Oita a few times a day.
I got off at Aso Station, the gateway to the stunning Aso-Kuju National Park, known for its active volcano and awesome natural landscapes.

I knew a volcano would be lurking in the description somewhere. Did you get a Bento for your smoko?
Very weedy and uncared-for track. I thought (mistakenly) that the Japanese were fussy about such things!
