Torii gates are iconic symbols of Japan. Usually located at the entrance to Shinto shrines, each gate is said to act as a passageway into a shrine’s sacred space. TOP TIP: When passing through a torii gate, it is customary to walk to the side instead of the centre, as it is believed the centre space is reserved only for the kami (gods) to pass through.
