Miffy Traffic Lights are a unique and playful addition to the streets of Utrecht. These traffic lights feature the beloved Dutch character Miffy as the pedestrian signal. The traffic lights are designed with Miffy’s signature white bunny shape and black dot eyes, making them easily recognizable to both locals and tourists.
Miffy is the main character in 32 of the 124 little picture books published by Dick Bruna (Utrecht, 1927). In the stories, Miffy actively explores the world around her, often together with her family and friends. Miffy was “born” in 1955. While on holiday in Egmond aan Zee, Dick Bruna would tell his eldest son, Sierk, bedtime stories about a little, white bunny, who scampered around the garden of their holiday home. This bunny became the inspiration for Miffy. Later, when Dick began sketching Miffy, he decided he would prefer to draw the bunny in a little dress, rather than a pair of trousers, and so Miffy became a little girl bunny.
These traffic lights not only serve their practical purpose of controlling traffic, but also add a touch of whimsy to the city. They have become a popular attraction for both young and old, with many people stopping to take photos with the Miffy signals.
In addition to the traffic lights, Miffy can also be found throughout Utrecht in various forms, such as statues, murals, and even on trams and buses. The Miffy Traffic Lights are just one way that the city of Utrecht has embraced the beloved character and incorporated her into their daily lives.
