Comparing sound – Sony FX3, Tascam x6 and Audio-Technica AT9946CM

Not a professional test.
I recorded sound with Audio-Technica AT9946CM connected to Sony FX3, same time I recorded sound with Tascam x6 built-in mics.
Then I connected Audio-Technica AT9946CM to Tascam x6.
In the end I tried Tascam x6 Built-in mics with Auto Gain
Audio-Technica AT9946CM mic had Low Cut filter enabled.

  1. Audio-Technica is still my favorite. For me, it has the Is most realistic surround and atmosphere. It's the one that makes me feel like I'm actually there.

  2. Have you ever considered recording your videos with a binaural audio microphone as well? It would make your videos so much more immersive.

You could even upload them to a different channel if you wanted to keep them separate from your current uploads, so you could have the normal video on this channel, but also have a binaural version of the same walking tour for people who like binaural audio experiences.

  3. 1 was too high pitched for me. 2 and 4 would be my preferred options. I am a viewer in the evening when sleeping so that does color my preference.

  4. Rambalac I choose the first one it’s more natural sounds as good the mandarin sounds guys talking.🤭🤭✌️.

  5. Rambalac, I make nearly identical videos to you — same equipment, same style, just in Canada instead of Japan. I have learned a lot from you.

    I prefer the first Audio-Technica AT9946CM 100%.

Have you considered using the Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro Stereo On-Camera? That is what I use for my videos.

  6. I think both Tascam (#2) and AT (#1) are good the only difference is that AT + FX3 you have quite a lot of noise which is gone with Tascam but I'm pretty sure with quick noise reduction you couldn't really tell the difference between #1 and #2

  7. #1 Tascam + Audio-Technica, #2 FX3 + Audio-Technica. The other 2 options (Tascam and Tascam Auto Gain) sounded too muffled.

  8. 1 and 3 have a high pitch white noise kind of feel to them that I find a bit off-putting. 2 and 4 had a nice deep background tone that is really relaxing, with 2 having more clarity in my opinion.

  9. Option 2 is the best, imo. The lower frequencies sound more immersive and relaxing.

  10. Привет от профессионало-звукоинженера из Германии 🙏🙏

The AudioTechnica is easily the better microphone by far.

A different work flow for the Tascam as an ADC (i. e. linear PCM, no resampling, no transcoding) may improve the transparency somewhat*** —

but the way things are now
the Sony does an excellent job in capturing the output of the AT9946CM already. 👌

#1 is the way to go! 😎👍

***The first 10 seconds of #3 do also exhibit a fairly strong amount of DC

  11. For me the first one is the best. It would be perfect with a low pass filter at the very top (~16 kHz).

  12. For usual video I would choose FX3 + Audio-Technica, maybe I already get used to it. For specific loud event, I feel Tascam Auto Gain would be the choice.

  13. Wow what a massive difference the Audio Technica makes. Also your videos activate HDR film maker mode on my TV and it looks stunning.

  14. For me 1 is the best-ambient is clear, 2 is with less ambient(almost unnatural much more low frequency) like Dolby B or C in old tape players, rest(3 and 4) is just like early Dolby A cuting off frequency 3- 9kHz – background conversations barely audible – good for interviews- preferring foreground but not for omnidirectional mics. But…depends on individual preferences…

  15. To be honest I prefer Audio-Technica of Option 1 and 3. Maintains details, yet clear enough. Option 1 just a little better, probably due to little lower volume level.
Tascam of Option 2, everyone talking about, is very dull in my opinion. Quickly bringing headache. Option 4 is just too quite – cutting most of ambience.
I have Rode Stereo Videomic Pro Rycote with . A little heavy to be used on top of camera with gimbal, though.
