The beauty of the kimono is known worldwide and is an integral part of Japanese culture, but is it socially acceptable for a tourist to wear one? In this video I will be sharing with you guys my opinion on the topic after having talked to locals and also my foreigner friends who have worn kimonos before. I was very excited to wear one for the very first time and do a special photoshoot to commemorate the occasion since it was always something I wanted to experience. I was also very fortunate to be able to do this in the cultural capital of Japan, which is Kyoto and a must for any trip to Japan. The travel health insurance I use – PassportCard Nomads: https://www.passportcardnomads.com/?ref=alinamcleod

*I highly recommend this travel health insurance because you don’t have to pay out of pocket for your medical expenses and they have very reasonably priced long term plans. You can buy the packages for shorter trips as well, but they’re especially fantastic for digital nomads and nomads who want regular health insurance when they are abroad. I am an affiliate of this company, but of course use the plans myself.

  1. No matter what your nationality and ethnicity you are, l would be happy to see people wear kimono. Kimono is not only for Japanese but for all people who like it.

  2. Lovely video, Alina! This kimono has transformed you into a very elegant Queen! (Not that you were not before 😂) What an experience and beautiful photos, lovely choice of color! Definitely suits the spring season xxx

I think the “wHiT3” people who said it’s a cultural appropriation must see it from another perspective, that it is actually a cultural appreciation!

  3. Very lovely and beautiful indeed, Alina. The teal color especially is great, and the entire thing totally suits you. Thanks for sharing!!

  4. I'd love to see you in a sari. If I recall correctly you are not a fan of India as a place to visit, so maybe Sri Lanka or Nepal?

  5. Hi!!!! Alina!!!! You look so veryyy beautiful and wonderful in wearing the kimono,,, I have a kimono but it's for martial arts judo, jiu-jitsu, arnis, combat and karate,,, and someday I add yawyan martial arts… Anyway. As I said you look so very beautiful,, 😊🐱💄💄

  6. 観光客が着物を着て京都の古い街並みを歩いてみるのは良い体験になると思います。実際には歩き辛かったり暑かったり寒かったり窮屈だったりと昔の人の体験出来る。

  7. You looked beautiful in that gorgeous kimono and Kyoto is the perfect setting to wear one in.

  8. You became an elegant lady by wearing beautiful kimono.
Don't worry about cultural issue. Probably kimono is actually delightful with an elegant lady like you.
Anyway, it is definitely worth of wearing even though it is hard to wear and move.

  9. We always welcome that foreigners wear kimono right way. Don't worry about cultual appropriation. You look beautiful in kimono.

  10. Hello Alina! You wore Kimono beautifully and I don't think it gives any disrespect to wear it in Japan; on the contrary Japanese people should be proud to see that even foreigners wear it as a sign of great respect towards this awesome country. Thank you very much for this nice video.

  11. If you’re planning to eat good meal don’t wear kimono. Something elastic is recommended.😅

  12. Nice video!!! But I do not think it’s a good idea to walk around Kyoto temples area with Kimono as you already experienced. Haha😅

  13. Of what I have seen, a lot of Japanese find it amusing when western people wear the kimono. I guess we look silly. I am sure some do get offended. BTW, you looked awesome. There is something I love about traditional dressings. I don't care where in the world it comes from, I love them. I have the utmost respect to people who hold onto their customs and traditions. I enjoyed seeing the ladies in their kimonos.

  14. Kimono is a compilation of techniques on textiles, dying, and weavings for a long time.
This is recyclable wear as private property, just allowed for women, from generation to generation in old days.
Wearing actual costumes is not only to know the sense of beauty but function itself.
Thank you for your deep understanding them.

Fashion industries in Japan are supported by those fabric technics nowadays.😃🙂😊💗💙💛
