The 3 best immersive art exhibitions in France can be found in Paris, Les Baux-de-Provence, and Bordeaux. While the “shows” can be the same (ie. Van Gogh showing in Paris and Les Baux), the experiences can be entirely different due to the unique venues where the exhibitions take place. It is also worth visiting more than once as the “shows” keep changing.

Paris’ Ateliers des Lumières (“workshop of lights), takes place in a former foundry (“Chemin-Vert) that made cast iron parts. There are 140 video projectors that display digital art by famous masters like Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Kandinsky.

Les Baux-de-Provence’s Carrières des Lumières is where the “quarries of light” immersive exhibition takes place. It’s a limestone quarry constructed in 1800 that supplied stone for neighbouring areas. The temperature inside averages 14-16° C so it’s a great place to visit to escape the summer heat. Art by Van Gogh, Picasso, and Klimt were projected on gigantic walls when I visited.

Bordeaux’ Bassins des Lumières (“pools of light”) takes place in a former submarine base. Digital images projected on the walls, ceiling, and the cistern are reflected in the pools of water creating a truly immersive sound and light show. In the “Venice La Sérénissime” show, you were transported to Venice by Italian painters like Bellini and Tintoretto.
