This time, our hosts visited Bungotakada, a city located in Oita Prefecture’s Kunisaki Peninsula.
The city developed long ago as the peninsula’s commercial center, and its “Showa Town” (Showa no Machi) is known for its nostalgic shopping arcades recreating the bustling atmosphere of the time.

There are many retro shops lining the streets, including cafes to experience Japan’s time-honored tea culture; Nikuno Kanaoka, where you can taste exquisite “Okara Croquette” enjoyed since the Showa period; Konchu no Yakata, an offbeat store that sells unique toy insects, and more.
Strolling through this old-fashioned neighborhood will make you feel as if you’ve slipped back in time!

One of the symbols of Showa Town is Showa Roman Gura, a theme park recreating the Showa era.
The facility was built from a renovated rice storehouse, and is filled with fun!
Highlights include the Showa no Yumemachi 3 Chome-kan, which recreates daily life, classrooms, and more from the era; Dagashiya no Yume Museum, which boasts a collection of roughly 60,000 carefully-selected childhood toys and such from around the 1950s (Showa 30); and the “teamLab Gallery Showa no Machi,” an immersive interactive digital art experience from teamLab.

Plus, Showa Town is also the starting point of the “Koikana Road,” which connects a series of spots known for granting luck in love.

This gorgeous 20 km route connects Showa Town with Cape Nagasakibana, famous for its stunning arrangement of flowers and art.
It is dotted with highlights like Awashima Shrine, dedicated to the god of matchmaking, and the Matama Coast, renowned for stunning sunsets, weaving together a romantic seaside drive with some of Oita’s most photogenic scenery in the background.

Discover the charm of old-school Japan in Showa Town, and tour the matchmaking spots of the Koikana Road for some shots to light up your socials!
