If you’re looking for a fun and engaging day trip in the Sapporo area, Shiroi Koibito Park and Otaru Canal should definitely be on your itinerary. In this video, I took some snap shots of these two popular attractions, starting with a quick visit to Shiroi Kibitz Park.
At the park, you will get to see the step-by-step process of how they make their famous Shiroi Koibito cookies, and even let you taste some of their mouth-watering treats. The rose garden, unfortunately, is covered with snow, plus we were not sure if roses are in full bloom during winter. Most of the flower beds are blanketed by snow by the way hehe.
Your alternative activities during this season would be to enjoy the other internal facilities such as their museum, grab a coffee at Cafe Butler’s Wharf at the second floor, or enjoy lunch at some of the restaurants located at the fourth floor, offering stunning views of the park and the nearby areas.
Then we proceed to the historic Otaru Canal, taking a bus at Otaru Ekimae Bus Terminal. As we explore the brick warehouses that have been converted into trendy shops and restaurants, Otaru Canal will offer a different landscape scenery as the surrounding area is covered with powdery white snow. Quite fortunately, snowfall also happened during our visit. It gave our Otaru Canal trip a rather enchanting snow experience turning winter wonderland into a reality for us.
And while in Otaru, don’t forget to grab some LeTao, in particular – their double Fromage variant. its milky, smooth mouthwatering texture is an experience in itself that will leave you wanting for more.
As the day comes to a close, the weather didn’t seem to be letting up and the snowfall continued. We wrapped up our trip by deciding to take a cab instead, from Otaru straight to our hotel in Susukino. We feared we may get trapped in snowstorm if the weather gets worse. It was a cool (and sleepy) cab ride easily damaging our pockets worth Y12,000+ for the cab fare haha. And whether you’re a foodie, a history buff, or just looking for a great day out in Sapporo, these two places should be in your list.
These are two extra reasons why visiting Sapporo is equally as fun as any other parts in Japan!
