Okonomiyaki is famous in two places in Japan- Hiroshima and Osaka. Hiroshima’s version shown here is cooked in layers instead of mixed together and cooked and has a heritage of being started by working mother entrepreneurs who served the local filling staple to support their families.

For this tour, we start in Alice Garden – a modern teenagers meeting spot and event venue – but this is where after the war, Okonomiyaki was served from food trolleys, cooked with coal, often on steel plates salvaged from navy ships.
Osaka’s version created after the Kanto earthquake of 1923 and Hiroshima’s version created after WW2 in 1945. Both created after times of total devastation when it was vital to have something cheap, filling and comforting to eat for workers rebuilding their lives and city.

This is a trial version of the virtual tour route we will be teaching the next generation of travel guides to do in a workshop in March this year – fun to try out the route and the stories with Ayaka to help us give advice for the types of topics and stories the students should try to introduce in their guiding as well. Please let us know which parts you liked best and we will make sure to include that in the workshop, thanks! It's such a fun project and I am sure the students will do an even better job (without the beer of course!)
