Happy Belated New Year’s!! If you’re watching this video, you too, have made it to 2023, so congrats!

How does Japanese People celebrate New Year’s??!? This year I was fortunate enough to spend new year’s in Japan, and let’s see how people celebrate the arrival of 2023 here in the land of the rising sun!

According to my Japanese friends, there are 2 customs practiced here:
1) Hatsumōde (初詣) – First Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine visit of the year where folks pray for good luck to start the year.

2) Fukubukuro (福袋) / Shopping – Fukubukuro, or the “lucky bag”, is a retail bag filled with unknown content sold at a discount. There’s also tons of New Year’s Sale going on, so it became a New Year’s custom.

To observe Hatsumōde, we decided to check out 2 of the most famous shrines/temples in Kyoto – the Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) and the Fushimi Inari Shrine (Thousand Tori Gate). As for shopping, we just walked around the main shopping area.
