No.22 New Year’s Eve

D: Today, let’s go for a drive to the north of Hamamatsu City.
M: What is the destination?
D: Nowhere in particular.
It’s fun to drive around with no destination in mind.
M: That’s true.
D: It’s so relaxing going for a drive north of Hamamatsu.
M: Absolutely.
It’s great to see mountains right in front us.

D: Maple, it’s the last day of the year.
Do you remember what it’s called?
M: Yes, of course. It’s New Year’s Eve, right?
I learned that “eve” means the day before an event or occasion.
D: Ya, that’s correct.
That’s why December 24th is Christmas Eve, the day before Christmas Day.
M: Yep.
I can’t believe that it’s already the end of the year.
D: I know. Time flies.

D: By the way, have you made your new year’s resolutions?
M: Oh, not yet. I totally forgot about it.
How about you?
D: I will study Japanese because I want to communicate more with people in Japanese.

Oanmaki is a Japanese confectionary.
It’s famous in the Mikawa area in Aichi, so I think I had it there once.
It’s made out of a batter similar to a Dorayaki batter.
D: Oh, it looks good.
M: The shop clerk told me that this shop is in front of Okuyama Hokoji Temple and that the branding of the temple is stamped on it.
D: It looks like there are 3 types.
M: Yep.
There is the smooth bean paste one, the white bean paste one, and the strawberry bean paste one. The shop clerk said the classic one was the smooth bean paste one, so I want to try that.
D: Great.
M: She is saying that some confectioneries here are made in their factory in front of this shop, and they get some items from other shops.
D: Ya, I can see there are so many interesting items.

Okuyama Hokoji is located in Kita-ku in Hamamatsu City.
It is very spectacular during the fall foliage season.
It’s the head temple of the Hokoji sect of Ringai Buddhism and is also famous as a Zen temple representative of the Tokai region.

D: That was a wonderful drive. Let’s head back now.
M: Sure.

M: Today, we’re going to have Toshikoshi Soba, buckwheat noodles, right?
D: Exactly. Do you know why Japanese people traditionally have buckwheat noodles on New Year’s Eve?
M: Ya, my previous keeper used to make the dish and told me the reason.
We eat it to break off the year’s bad luck.
In fact, buckwheat noodles break apart more easily than other noodles.
D: Wow, I didn’t know that. I thought buckwheat noodles were traditionally eaten to live longer like the noodles.
