A cold atmospheric front brought heavy snowfalls to Japan, which have been going on for a week.
In Niigata Prefecture in the southern Tohoku region, a severe cold snap brought a record for the most snowfall for December. In some places, the height of snowdrifts exceeded 2 meters.
According to meteorologists, the height of snowdrifts reached about 2.6 meters in Yamagata prefecture and more than 2.3 meters in Niigata prefecture. In a number of cities, daily snow records were broken.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warns that snowfall will continue in the region and urges residents to be on high alert. Interruptions in the movement of public transport, trains and airports are possible.
Snowfall is expected to continue for a few more days, mainly on the coast of the Sea of Japan from north to west of Japan.
