Koumyozan Hokokuin Amida-ji Temple is a Nyobonenbutsu centre founded by Danjo Shonin in March 16009. Danzhu Shonin was born in the village of Umibe in Owari Province, but at the age of nine he became an ordained priest himself, and spent more than 20 years in Buddhist ascetic practice deep in the mountains of Mugei in Mino Province, where he was imprisoned in the Kannon Hall. Afterwards, he travelled around the country and underwent a series of ascetic practices before finally arriving in Kochiya, the last place of his ascetic training.

A maple tree, a natural monument and more than 800 years old, is located on the south side of the approach to the temple. Ohara is full of beautiful autumn foliage, but the autumn foliage at Amida-dera Temple is particularly beautiful and has been known as a famous autumn foliage spot since the Edo period (1603-1868). The sight of hundreds of maple trees turning red is spectacular.

In front of the temple, there is a statue of Danzhuang Shonin with his own hair. A small amount of this hairpiece can still be seen near the ears. On the right side of the front is a seated statue of the Amida Nyorai, an important cultural property, dating from the Kamakura period (artist unknown).
Stone corridor

A year before Dançon Shonin entered the monastery, he asked monks in training at the time to dig a rock cave. Here, the mummy of the deceased Shonin, who entered the stone niche while still alive and became a ‘mummy Buddha’, is enshrined in the posture of a sitting monk with folded palms in a sitting posture.
