If you’ve taken a river cruise or an ocean cruise and are wondering how the two experiences differ, this is the video for you! I’m a long-time ocean cruiser having cruised since I was 11 years old, this year I have taken two river cruises and was amazed how different the experiences are.

The differences include just about all elements of onboard life including dining, the daily schedule, the ships themselves and the other passengers.

  1. Another video crammed full of useful information, I don’t know how you manage it every single week but I’m certainly glad that you do. Thank you. P.s Great to hear one of my favourite words being used…”snuggly” 😂😂

  2. Do you get motion sickness on river cruises? I seem to remember you do on ocean cruises.

  3. Hi Emma I haven't done a river cruise but I do prefer cruise ships the bigger the better ,thanks for the great information about both ships 🛳

  4. Hi Emma! This was great. We have never done a river cruise, so this was terrific information. Also, I love your little black/white sign board in your office setting. That is a great idea.

  5. Well done Emma!! A unique way of presenting these comparisons. I think I will stick with the ocean cruises, more me time available.

  6. I have experienced seeing the same people over and over on a 7 day ocean cruise of 3000 passengers….lol.
    Maybe same interests

  7. I have not yet river cruised…..but I did live in Germany for 4 years, and visited all the towns along the Rhine and Mosel.
Still have on top of my bucket list to do a river cruise.

  8. most important destinations: land tour is best mostly. ocean cruises resort, river cruises is bus tour. vienna budapest munich(?) salzburg danube or land tour, dresden prague wittenberg elbe river cruise or land. venice athens barcelona naples ocean cruise or land. milano florence rome paris london berlin seville cordoba granada figueres ocean excursion or land tour but land is better. know pros and cons be well informed. since river cruises are so close to destinations, is there a way passengers can just enjoy free time in vienna, prague, budapest, ….?

  9. mostly ocean cruises you need excursions, river cruises you will never need an excursion, meaning port to city is two three hours away as in ocean cruises. river cruises is more all inclusive, you pay much more upfront, once you add up excursions, tips, wifi, drinks, ….. you end up paying much more on an ocean cruise than on a bus tour, river cruises can be cheapest even more than bus tour because everything is paid for. however some cities cannot be reached by cruise madrid leipzig halle zwickau eisenach bergamo busseto …..

  10. caribbean new england alaska are fine by ocean cruises. india cambodia are land tour or river cruises.

  11. river cruising includes excursions wifi meals drinks ocean does not include these nor shopping gambling sometimes activities… rivers visit in land destinations while ocean cruises visit ports not cities nor actual towns… ocean cruises offer entertainment

  12. how do you compare bus train v river cruising? which places can only be reached by land v river v ocean?

  13. river cruises might be cheaper than bus train tour packages given the inclusions; ocean cruises can easily rack up a lot of expenses…

  14. poland czech hungary austria germany river cruise make more sense; italy spain make sense by river or land never ocean; france england again river or land; holland scandinavia ocean makes sense along with russia and turkey

  15. it seems all river cruises visit the same places per river; whereas ocean please check out excursions offered and consider their prices before booking

  16. Absolutely correct on both. It depends on what the cruiser is looking for, but they are both worth the expense…most times. You should have mentioned water levels and how with some river cruises you may have to switch boats but with at least Viking, which has many identical ships, the switch can be relatively painless.

  17. Emma have you been on a Disney Cruise if yes your thoughts and which one Thanks 😎😎😎

  18. I've been on cruise ships. Never been on a river cruise. I had a great time on the cruise ship. Met lots of people. Still in contact with some of them. And these were ships with over 2,000 people. I think you just have to be willing to be more outgoing. I'm medium outgoing and I still got to know people and see them again during the cruise. Also it helps if you've got a stationary table instead of the free wheeling dining. I did that once and hated it. Those people come and go quickly then you're right. But it was just nice to get to a table and know that basically the same people were there and you could share experiences of the day.

  19. I have a friend who was disappointed on his first river cruise because he thought he'd be on the water watching the scenery, as you describe at the end of your video. He said the ship traveled at night and the day was spent in a port, so he didn't get to do that. I'd love it if you could talk about that in a future video because it's a deal-breaker for me. It must depend on the type of river cruise?

  20. My wife and I have always done ocean cruises, but we booked our first river cruise for 2023 – 15 days on Viking. Very excited !

  21. To me cruises just remind me of “benidorm” . When you’re so obsessed about food and drink that are willing to be sea sick for the experience.when you live in the Uk you can eat anything from anywhere in the world . I don’t want to spend half my holiday at sea on a floating sespit prison. I do love Emma’s videos though. It’s lovely to put them on at bedtime and just fall asleep
