As Emperor Naruhito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne Wednesday, people on the street in Japan expressed hope that the new emperor continues to carry on the legacy shaped by his father and the new era would continue to be peaceful. The Shimizu family was visiting the Akasaka Palace State Guest House in Tokyo for the first time on the day of the new emperor’s ascension. “The new emperor has never known war,” the mother said. “Our relationship with the rest of the world is going to change during the Reiwa Era. Hopefully for the better.” To commemorate the new era, the Akasaka Palace State Guest House and its garden café in the front courtyard will be open to the public until Monday.
