Shopping in a new place is extra fun because you never know quite what you’re going to find. When I travel, exploring the local drugstore is something I love to do, not only because I find it really fun but also because I think you can glean a lot about a place and culture by poking through the shelves. I visited a store in Taipei, Taiwan to check out their beauty goods (makeup and skincare) and some Taiwanese products so iconic and popular that you’d likely find them in someone’s bag if you randomly stopped them on the street. It’s fun to know what’s considered a ‘must buy’ item in Taiwan so if you’re looking for souvenirs, or just fun new things to try out, I hope this video is helpful.

Totally with you… I can fritter away hours in drug stores & supermarkets… I usually come home with my favourite souvenirs from them! They say so much about the locals by what they stock. Gold!

You missed a few of the things that make drug stores in Taiwan different (better?) than the US – contact lenses are sold over the counter (no prescription required) and you also don’t need a prescription for most medication (except for opioid pain killers and some sleeping pills). As a side note, though, charcoal is a protected substance… The Darlie toothpaste is made by Proctologist’s & Gamble, and up until 5 or 6 years ago was marketed under the name “Darkie” with the same graphics. 😳
The toothpaste is called "Black Person Toothpaste" in Chinese. They also have a brand called Whitemen Toothpaste. Definitely can find so many interesting things at stores like this in Asia. Half the time you don't even know what the item is for!

You know what else is fun to shop at in Taiwan? Convenience stores. Taiwan has highest density of convenience stores per person..

You have to be careful when you say “drugstore” in Taiwan. The common name stores don’t actually sell “drugs”.

I have been to Taiwan and some Europeans country like Switzerland. Switzerland compare to Taiwan is 30 years behind Taiwan. Taiwanese are Very polite and respectful people, but they didn’t behave like Swiss or some Europeans people. They are discriminating foreigners in there county. Bad peoples
