If my experience is the same, using economy could be a pain. I used the JR East Tohoku pass which allows for travel on the northern lines. The hook with these passes is you can use open seating. The Tohoku line is reserved seating. This means you'll be fine leaving Tokyo but when you hit the next station you might be giving up your seat to someone who reserved that seat. You could wind up standing in the vestibule the whole trip.
