Most tourists head strictly to UNESCO Tenryu-ji Temple complex and Bamboo Forest (walk from one to another easily) omitting all other Arashiyama sights. Tenryu-ji is head temple of the Tenryu-ji Rinzai Zen sect, and built in 1339 by the first Ashikaga shogun.
The exquisite pond garden dates back to 794-1185. And I have trouble keeping an orchid alive…
